Beat the autumn gloom with a Kusturica film

hungry_heart_tournage_4

With two Palmes D’Or awards under his belt, Emir Kusturica is the punk kid of Serbian cinema. He wears more hats that wikipedia can keep track of: he’s a musician and tours with his band No Smoking Orchestra. A sell-out writer. An actor with several French films in his repertoire. And he is also the former president of the Ski Association of Serbia.

He is nothing if not a character and controversy seems to follow him, but love him or hate him, you are missing a huge chunk of European cinema if you haven’t seen his films. And this is where we can help.

We want to introduce you to Emir Kusturica the filmmaker though his gem Life is a Miracle. Join us for the screening on 16th of April. You can safely call this a not-to-be-missed opportunity.

Domestic screening – a success

We’re stoked with our EuRaw Stories second screening. Thank you to all who got curious about what we have to offer and joined us on the night.

The film delivered its promise of quirky, dark humour, and Clara Voda’s presence made the night all the more interesting. We got some insight into the process of filming Domestic and her observations about the film industry in Eastern Europe and in Australia. Clara currently teaches at the New York Film Academy Australia in Sydney.

The Woolshed Pub turned out to be the perfect place to get moving and chatting after the screening.

Overall, we had a great night and hope you did too. We’d love to hear your feedback and ideas on how we could do better in the comments below.

Do your plans include EuRaw Stories tonight?

We sure hope so! Here’s a recap of what we have in store for you at tonight’s screening:

Buy your pass online or at the door. If you came to our launch last month, just bring your launch ticket along and you get free entry. Hope to see you there from 6pm.

Drinks at the Woolshed

We felt we couldn’t easily see a film together and not…well…party afterwards. So join us after the screening at The Woolshed Pub for an intimate after-party.

Just a bit about the Woolshed Pub – it’s got an awesome view of Victoria Harbour and everything you’d hope to find in a good bar: live music, great drinks, good atmosphere, all in a heritage listed space. Old and new come together in a Melbourne kind of way, the old woolshed transformed into a modern space with lots of reminiscent elements. Sounds like a perfect place to hang out, right?

So come and have a chat, praise or critique the film, listen to music, enjoy the view, have a drink.

Adrian Sitaru awarded in Berlin

Last month we were telling you our March film director, Adrian Sitaru, had his latest film, ‘Illegitimate’, selected for the Berlin Film Festival. The screening didn’t go unnoticed and he went home with a little extra luggage, namely the CICAE Art Cinema Award.

Adrian Sitaru’s films approach taboo topics, ask unspeakable questions and wonder out loud about moral dilemmas, exposing the absurdity of life in the process. He somehow manages to approach the most serious topics  while making audiences laugh out loud.

Come see his film ‘Domestic’ on 19th of March at The Dock Performance space in Docklands.

Book tickets here.

Meet the Artist – Clara Voda

We couldn’t wait to tell you about our very special guest at the March screening.  The marvelous Clara Voda, who played Nicole in Domestic (Romania 2013), will be joining us for a Q&A session after the screening on the 19th of March.

Some of her film credits include:

  • ‘The Death of Mister Lazarescu’, awarded Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival 2008
  • ‘If I Want To Whistle I Whistle’, which won the Berlin Silver Bear and scored a European Academy Award nomination in 2010.

She is a key representative of the new wave of Romanian cinema and was awarded Best Actress in Romania several times, including in 2015 (UCIN Award for Best Actress).

As well as an impressive list of film credits, Clara also has extensive experience as a theatre actor. She performed in theatres around the world, including for Australian audiences during the Canberra Theatre Festival in 2000. During that visit, Clara felt a connection with all things Australian and she later moved to live with her family to Sydney.

Clara now lectures on Acting for Film and Scene Study at the New York Film Academy in Sydney and she has just finished working on her first Australian film, Pop-up, shot in Newcastle NSW and in Romania.

March Screening – the Australian Premiere of Domestic (Romania 2013)

Circle March the 19th in your calendars and get ready for the Australian Premiere of Domestic (Romania 2013).

Adrian Sitaru’s Domestic (Romania 2013) is an absurdist comedy about the relationships we take for granted: people and the animals they love, they eat, they ignore, they worry about. A perfect balance of tenderness and humour.

More about the film here.

And remember, if you came to our launch, just bring your pass along and you will get free entry to Domestic. For all the other movie enthusiasts passes can be bought online or on the night.

Launch Night

Last month EuRaw Stories launched into the cultural landscape of Melbourne. To those of you who were there on the night, thank you for joining us in exploring and celebrating  the raw East of Europe. We nibbled, we listened to soulful music, we laughed and marvelled at the screen, we discussed and we danced. And so the adventure begins.

Don’t forget, your launch ticket includes entry to our next two screenings and they are incredible films, not to be missed!

Let the journey through the East continue.
