{"id":1299,"date":"2016-05-17T10:15:35","date_gmt":"2016-05-17T00:15:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/euraw.com.au\/staging\/3790\/?p=1299"},"modified":"2026-01-26T22:18:55","modified_gmt":"2026-01-26T11:18:55","slug":"may-screening-elena","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/euraw.com.au\/staging\/3790\/may-screening-elena\/","title":{"rendered":"Examining human nature with <i>Elena<\/i>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Andrey Zvyagintsev has only directed four feature films and each of them won him prestigious awards at festivals around the world.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">In 2003 he shot his first full-length film,<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>The Return, <\/em>which was awarded the <em>Golden Lion for Best Film<\/em> and <em>Lion of the Future<\/em> at the Venice Film Festival &#8211; a first for Zvyagintsev and the majority of his crew.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">His next movie,<em>The Banishment,<\/em><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0received the award for <em>Best Male Role<\/em><\/span> (Konstantin Lavronenko) at Cannes Film Festival in 2007.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Leviathan<\/em>, his fourth film, won <em>Best Screenplay<\/em> at the <em>2014\u00a0 Cannes Film Festival. <\/em>In 2015, <em>Leviathan<\/em> also scored a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination for the best film in a foreign language.<\/p>\n<p>This Sunday we are screening Zvyagintsev&#8217;s third full feature film, the engrossing noir thriller <em><a href=\"http:\/\/euraw.com.au\/program-2016\/may\/\">Elena<\/a>, <\/em>which won him the <em>Un Certain Regard Special Jury Prize<\/em> at Cannes in 2011.
