Goodbye for now Nadia

Our lovely Treasurer Nadia Cranganu and one of the founders of Euraw Inc, has been so inspired by the stories on screen that she decided to move to Eastern Europe.

Thank you Nadia for all the amazing work you put into starting EuRaw, for spreading the word, for taking great photos at each event, for all the spirit and energy you brought to this project. It wouldn’t have happened without you. We are really excited about your decision and can’t wait to hear your stories. All the best and don’t forget us!

Half time

We can hardly believe we’re already halfway through our first year. So far we have screened 5 movies, with 5 more to go.

Quite a mix of cultures and film styles, we started with an express trip around Europe, presenting 5 short films on our launch night. Then we went to Romania for a dark fast-talking comedy, and to Serbia led by Emir Kusturica’s effervescence. Russia and Macedonia were our latest stop overs, with two very different, memorable films. Yep, quite a journey we’ve been on so far. And strap on, it was just the beginning.

Thank you all for your loyal presence,  your curiosity and your support. We have some incredible films coming up for the rest of the year and we can’t wait to share them with you all.

Spread the word, share the stories!

Examining human nature with Elena

Andrey Zvyagintsev has only directed four feature films and each of them won him prestigious awards at festivals around the world.

In 2003 he shot his first full-length film, The Return, which was awarded the Golden Lion for Best Film and Lion of the Future at the Venice Film Festival – a first for Zvyagintsev and the majority of his crew.

His next movie,The Banishment, received the award for Best Male Role (Konstantin Lavronenko) at Cannes Film Festival in 2007.

Leviathan, his fourth film, won Best Screenplay at the 2014  Cannes Film Festival. In 2015, Leviathan also scored a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination for the best film in a foreign language.

This Sunday we are screening Zvyagintsev’s third full feature film, the engrossing noir thriller Elena, which won him the Un Certain Regard Special Jury Prize at Cannes in 2011. Joins us for a gripping afternoon of film and culture. Book your pass now.

Nela Trifkovic discusses Kusturica at EuRaw Stories

Saray Iluminado‘s front woman, Nela Trifkovic, discusses the kaleidoscopic genius of Emir Kusturica this Saturday at EuRaw Stories.

Nela will introduce the film drawing on her artistic insight into Kusturica’s films, particularly the musical elements, as well as on her personal history of growing up in an often misunderstood and misinterpreted Yugoslavia, a country that pioneered the non-aligned movement.

Nela’s childhood was a miracle, as was her narrow escape from the war torn Bosnia in the 90s. Kusturica has a narrative of his own, as do his zany, unforgettable characters, that celebrate the survivors, the fighters, the kings, queens and misfits inside us all!

About Nela

You might remember Nela Trifkovic from her performance on our opening night. She is a Bosnian-Australian artist whose multi-faceted practice includes the disciplines of music, theatre, performance and installation art. She trained at WAAPA and VCA. A recipient of several grants and scholarships, Nela has performed and conducted research in Australia, Asia, Europe and USA. In the realm of folk music, Bosnian Sevdah and Sephardic Jewish songs are Nela’s greatest passion. They have been an integral part of her life and upbringing. These musical genres have inspired the formation of the ensemble Saray Iluminado, allowing Nela to gather a curious bunch of like-minded musical travellers and pursue life away from home by finding a home in song.

Drinks at the Woolshed

We felt we couldn’t easily see a film together and not…well…party afterwards. So join us after the screening at The Woolshed Pub for an intimate after-party.

Just a bit about the Woolshed Pub – it’s got an awesome view of Victoria Harbour and everything you’d hope to find in a good bar: live music, great drinks, good atmosphere, all in a heritage listed space. Old and new come together in a Melbourne kind of way, the old woolshed transformed into a modern space with lots of reminiscent elements. Sounds like a perfect place to hang out, right?

So come and have a chat, praise or critique the film, listen to music, enjoy the view, have a drink.
